"FISTS OF FURY"

The Black Box Theatre was literally kicking with asthenosphere this past Saturday night! It was high octane, non stop action all the way when the "Fist Of Fury" Kickboxing & K-1 promotion got underway. As far as Kickboxing shows goes, this has to rank up there with the best of them. All the fighters who travelled from various parts of the country, as far away as France, and of course the home fighters, gave it everything. There was eleven electrifying bouts on the card including four IKF All Ireland Titles and an International K-1 Superfight and a good mix of experienced campaigners and debut fighters, there was knockouts, distance fights, titles changing hands, new champions crowned etc. and all in all, a great night for the exciting sport of Kickboxing.
The main event between Galways Bryan Merrigan and Michael Gerard from France ended early. The Frenchman caught Merrigan with a vicious right hook to the jaw in round one and the referee called the fight off.
The Galway Black Dragon Club took home three National Titles and their sister club, the Donegal Black Dragon Club also won a National Title.
Amy Wilson (formerly of Galway Black Dragon) from the Donegal Club fought Gillian Duffy from Global Kickboxing in Dublin. Wilson won a unanimous points victory to claim the IKF Ladies All Ireland Light Welterweight Crown.
Shane Creaven from the Galway Black Dragon Club and sponsored by Lydons Bar of Knockdoe took on Keith Shelly who also fights out of the well respected Global Kickboxing Gym in Dublin. This was the pairs second time to meet and Creaven made it two out of two. After a hard fought battle over five rounds with the teak tough Shelly, Creaven took home the vacant IKF All Ireland Light Heavyweight Title.
Paul "Hurricane" Huish was all business when he went to the ring to take on the current IKF All Ireland Welterweight Champion Evan Walker who fights out of Jimmy Courtneys Gym in Dublin. Walker, who has a "fight all comers" attitude came to the ring looking trim and fit... Not to mention he was a good four inches taller than Huish. However true to his name, the Hurricane blew in and gave a master class of text book kickboxing to rip the title from the plucky Dublin fighter.
Although Walker boxed really well, Huish landed kick after kick to his lead leg as well as several high kicks to the head. He even threw a spectacular spinning backfist that, if it landed on the button, would have surely finished the contest. The fight went the championship distance and Huish became Galways next All Ireland IKF Champion.
Charlie "The Iceman" Ward was the last title fight of the night. He took on Dublins Eric Nolan for the recently vacated IKF All Ireland Super Welterweight Crown. This was always going to be a cracker of a fight as both young men have been very busy on the International circuit lately. Nolan has been over and back to the UK for some big fights and Ward having won a silver medal at the IKF World Classic in Florida this past July.
Right from the bell to sound the opening round, both warriors went at it hammer and tongs! This was the action all the way until round four when Ward landed a mighty uppercut which had the Brave Nolan out on his feet. He quickly followed up with a picture perfect right hook to seal the deal giving Ward the Title by Knockout. The roof almost came off the Black Box such was the roars from the fired up fight fans and a new superstar was born.

1: Referee Mick Burke (Dublin), Shane Creaven (Galway - new IKF All Ireland Light Heavyweight Champ), Martina Lydon from Lydons Bar in Knockdoe - Sponsor, Pete Foley (Galway Black Dragon Coach).

Results From Golden Cobra Center of Fitness's
Toyota Center Tornados Tamed
The fight card consisted of seven Muay Thai and Kickboxing bouts. Two of those seven fights were IKF South Mountain Regional Title Fights. Saxon Vaughan and his twin brother Talon Vaughan were the Main and Semi-Main event of the evening. Their older brother Dakota Vaughan was also on the card. All three attend Prescott High school where they excel in sports (wrestling) & academics (Honor Roll). Now they can add two IKF Regional Titles to their accomplishments. It wasn't easy finding themselves straight in the middle of the Triple Title Tornados. Heading in their paths were two Tornados coming from Albuquerque, New Mexico. For the Semi-Main event, Slade Ring, 16 years old and 114 lbs. with a 6-3 record from Mean One MMA, took on Saxon Vaughan, 15 years old, 115 lbs. with a 2-2 record from Golden Cobra Center of Fitness. They competed for the vacant IKF South Mountain Regional Flyweight (IR) Title. Jordan Vasquez, 17 years old, 142lbs with a 38-2 record from Mean One MMA took on Talon Vaughan, 15 years old, 142lbs with a 2-0 record from Golden Cobra. The third Title on the card was vacated. We were unable to find a contending fighter for Jesse "The Beast" Duran. By the end of the night, we can all say that the Vaughan Brothers weathered the storm and tamed the tornados they faced in the ring last Saturday night at Tim's Toyota Center by becoming the two new IKF South Mountain Regional Champions.
Golden Cobra Center of Fitness Inc. would like to special thank Tommy Delacruz, all his staff at Galpin Ford in Prescott, Arizona, the main sponsor for this event. They would also like to thank all of their other sponsors for their help and of course, the Golden Cobra Center of Fitness Inc staff and helpers. For those who attended the fights, they sure got their monies worth with several U.S.A. Boxing matches, 5 Kickboxing matches and 2 four round title fights that went the distance. These kids fought their hearts out from all over the Southwest! They came from Nevada, New Mexico, California and clubs from all over Arizona. Keep your eyes open for our next IKF Kickboxing Championships in the Prescott area. You won't want to miss the next one!
