MARINOBLE'S
In The News!... Or In a Video....

On the subject of new gyms popping up, Former IKF Pro World Champion Dave "MADMAN" Marinoble (Right - And holder of about 6-8 other titles...) recently expanded his training center to a massive 10,000 square foot facility. - www.marinobles.com - However, that didn't get him on the news page for this write-up. Instead, we decided to do a piece on Dave because he is featured in a Music Video that may make it to TV. That's right, a Music video...

No... Dave can't sing (lol... or who knows, maybe he can...) but he can fight, and look like he's taking a beating. However a little coaching from bother Mike (Left - Another former IKF Champion) and the end gets better for them both.

Don "The Dragon" Wilson
On Headbutts, Hughes, and Hitting 54

By Thomas Hackett - TotalMMA.com

A week ago I was reminded that I'm not the only MMA fan out there with a place in my heart for Don "The Dragon" Wilson, as Hawaii's Fighter's Club Radio ran an interview with the ex-UFC and KOTC commentator. For those unfamiliar with the show, it runs 9am Mondays on Honolulu's AM 1500, and is hosted by Elite XC veteran Mark Kurano and the former matchmaker for Icon MMA, Patrick Freitas. Their interview with Wilson begins at about the 12:00 mark.

This was the most fun I've had listening to an interview in a long time. Think about it. From kung-fu and kickboxing in the 1970's and 1980's, to MMA and B-Movies in the 1990's and 2000's, Don "The Dragon" Wilson, has basically been party to every martial arts trend. Now, at age 54, he's preparing for a 10 round kickboxing bout in Cyprus, his first since 2002. It will be Wilson's 75th bout in the sport where he has notched 48 knockouts.

But best of all, if you believe his side of the story, his KO total should have included everyone from Matt Hughes to Royce Gracie. And that is what makes this guy awesome.

"The sport I was born to do is wrestling," Wilson recalls early on. What? With no background in grappling, the high school football and basketball player Wilson describes trying out at a Junior College and becoming a strong competitor in the sport. But when American kickboxing began in 1974, everything changed and Wilson embarked on a career that would earn him several world titles.

But what was he excited about introducing to the UFC?

"One of the reasons I wanted to do the UFC is I felt I'd be unstoppable with the headbutts," Wilson says. "Because I'd knock guys out — remember now, (I was) a middle linebacker. I'd drop my weight down, come right under the chin, and I knock guys out with helmets. For me, that was gong to be a technique. Anybody who'd try and shoot for a takedown, or even punch, I'd rather tuck my chin and try and headbutt the guy… in the standup game I would have dominated."

The handshake agreement according to Wilson was that he'd get a percentage of UFC PPV in a bout against Gracie after doing commentary on a show. But the deal never happened.

Later, Wilson says he was offered $75,000 to fight Matt Hughes. "This is before the Spike TV (deal). They were losing money. I immediately said yes. I shook on it with a guy from Hughes' camp who was "representing" the UFC…"

"I'm in the bar," he recalls. "I've had a couple glasses of wine, and the matchmaker says I can't believe you're fighting Matt Hughes for that money. I said, I'd probably have fought him for half that. When the offer comes in, it's half."

So negotiations broke down and Wilson says Dana White hasn't called him since they met a few years ago. "Guys, it may happen, it may not, but if it doesn't, it isn't because the Dragon doesn't want it!" I want a drink from whatever well this man drinks from. And so should you.

Friedsberg stands 5'10" tall and did not list any fight experience on his registration. His trainer is CD Williamson of CD Williamson Karate & Kickboxing in Niceville Florida.

Friedsberg may be the first, but certainly won't be the last of the Amateur Kickboxers who will make the journey to Orlando, Florida to be a part of the 11th Annual 2009 IKF World Classic. This years 2008 IKF World Classic held this past July drew record numbers as 262 fighters registered and 227 showed up to "Walk The Walk" and fought in the 222 bouts over the weekend to be crowned the "Best Amateur Kickboxers in the World!"

Guila's IKF PKB Tournament...
Nails It Yet Again!

Dennis Guila (Right) and his crew nails another successful event in Antioch, CA. He packed his gym with enthusiastic fighter from across the state. There were many new faces at the event and those that were there for the first time said that they "Really enjoyed the event" and plan to make it a part of there regular routine.

The tournament started in good time as IKF / PKB President Johnny Davis open with the all too important rules and emphasizing the importance of a semi contact event and no knockout allowed.

Men, Women and Junior went at it with vigor! Some of the reasons that some of the new faces had not shown up at Point Kickboxing events in the past is because the thought that the term "Kickboxing" meant only above the waist. Well, lets make it clear, when we at the IKF use the term kickboxing is mean all are only one style of kickboxing. But for clarity, when we do IKF Point Kickboxing for the most part all three major rule styles are involved. Point Muay Thai which allows leg kicks and knees to the body. American Kickboxing, with is high kick only. (No Leg Kicks) and International rules with include leg kicks only and the remaining arsenal involved with kickboxing...boxing and all the kicks.

So, we hope that it is clear, IKF Point Kickboxing represents the three major rules styles of kickboxing and has a division waiting for you at each event.

WE look forward to seeing you at the next IKF Point Kickboxing event in Grass Valley, CA on October 18th. And also, November 8th in Newcastle, CA will be another exciting event that will include Grappling!

Congratulations again to Mr. Dennis Guila and his Team! ...and by the way, after the event, we all joined in to eat some delicious Oriental Cuisine while being serenaded by Dennis Guila's singing and playing the bongos in great Hawaiian fashion. Guila demonstrated some nice vocals and Impressive skills on the bongos! :)

3 IKF Mexico Title Fights
In Puerto Vallarta October 31st

By Bob Cohen - PVNN

Felix Perez

The IKF represented in Mexico by Felix Perez (L) has announced a Triple Main Event Muay Thai fight card scheduled for Saturday, October 31st at the Plaza De Toros La Paloma. This was the site of a huge event almost 4 years ago held by the IKF at the same venue that saw Puerto Vallarta fighters win world championships and Mexican championships.

At stake at this event are three IKF Mexican Muay Thai belts announced by Ketzal Productions Director General Felix Reno Perez Ponce at a recent press conference. The triple main event has Puerto Vallarta's Cesar "El Mego" Palomera, already a belt holder in the welterweight division, moving up in weight to attempt to capture the vacant IKF Super Welterweight title against Jose Francisco "La Sombra" Ramos of Mexico City. Palomera, fighting out of Sityodtong Gym, enters the bout with a record of 9-1.

Also a champion with a CNKB title, Puerto Vallarta's Gregorio "Dragonsito" Gabriel (11-1) of Dragon Manzanarez Gym will battle for the IKF Featherweight title against veteran Eduardo Santos Moreno of Mexico City in the second of the main events.

In the third main event Carlos "El Metralleta" Solorio, owner and maestro of Lanna Gym in Puerto Vallarta will fight Ricardo Neftali "Jerry" Garcia of Irapuato, Mexico for the vacant Super Lightweight IKF title. Solorio is 20-7 and Garcia comes into the bout with a record of 11-2.

The undercard will have four other professional fights and each features a fighter from Puerto Vallarta. Hugo Solorio of Vallarta will battle Daniel "El Pony" Villegas Ruiz of Mexico City in the featherweight division. Pedro "El Kick" Camberos of Puerto Vallarta will fight Ismael "La Piedra" Gomez of Mexico City in the welterweight division. Two fighters making their professional debuts will fight in the middleweight class, as Josue Ruelas of Vallarta is pitted against Candelario Torres Reyes of Mexico City.

Two women's fighters will battle in the lightweight division as both fight their second career bouts. Following in her Dad's footsteps is Yajaira "La Princesita" Manzanarez, who was a dominating success in her first fight, facing Wendy Peña; both of Puerto Vallarta. Yajaira is the daughter of Santiago "Dragon" Manzanarez, (Right) who won the IKF Pro international Rules Middleweight World title at the same venue four years ago on November 27th, 2004 when he defeated Fernando Calleros of El Paso, Texas, USA by Split Decision, 97-99, 98-92 and 97-94. 3 Time IKF World Champion
Holly Fernley
Bids Farewell To Kickboxing

Retires IKF Title

On October 1st, 2008, 3 Time IKF World Champion Holly Fernley made it official as she said "Good-bye" to a sport that she fought for in more ways than most Champions had to. For most of her career, holly wasn't just fighting for wins and titles in the ring. No, unlike the majority of the women in fight sports today, she was constantly fighting the politics in Australia that for so many years, would not allow Women to participate in ANY fight Sport, kickboxing as well as boxing.

During her fighting career she won 3 IKF World titles and was one of the most feared Women fighters in the world. "I'm having fun fighting Kyokushin Karate in Queensland." Said Holly, "Scaring the kids... lol.. Wish I could defend my titles but I'm not training enough these days so I will just retire gracefully.."

Always a Champion in the ring, Holly was also a champion as well as an ambassador outside the ring. What other women around the world take for granted, Holly had to constantly fight for. That was because women's fighting in ANY fight sport was banned in New South Wales. Holly stood her ground many times, and not just for herself but for the many woman fighter's in the country as well. In fact, one of Holly's titles came about by Forfeit which started from the fight being banned in New South Wales.

At the time, the view of the New South Wales Boxing Authority (NSWBA) was "a women's place is in the home cooking and having babies." This opinion came about because the 'ONLY' reason the NSWBA could tell the IKF when they questioned the rule as to why women shouldn't be allowed to fight was, and we will quote, "Well I guess they could injure their unborn fetus." That was the "ONLY" Reason anyone from the NSWBA gave the IKF at the time and those were the words of one of their chief members, Dave Morland. In fact, worse yet, other than the answer the IKF was given above, not "1" single member on the NSWBA could give the IKF any other JUSTIFIED REASON as to WHY women were not allowed to fight in Boxing or Kickboxing in NSW Australia. Their most common answer was, "It's just the law..." Keep in mind at the time (July of 2007) that the IKF was talking about a state that lies in the country that was ready to host the 2000 Olympic Games in September of that year. A state that has a law that "STILL" discriminates against women. To read more about that political mess holly and other women fighters had to deal with in New South Wales Australia, click HERE.

After winning her final IKF title in January of 2001, Holly still tried to keep busy. She had wanted to fight Ramona Gatto, but Gatto had turned down the offer to fight Holly in 2000 which lead to Gatto's retirement.

Holly was not always a big fan or even very good in just straight of Boxing, but she would accept bouts to simply keep busy between 1997 and 2004 she had 7 boxing bouts but won only 1, losing 5 and 1 ending in a draw. Strangely though, promoters knew her potential and she was matched for a Vacant OBA Female Light Welterweight Title in only her second pro boxing match where Holly lost a unanimous decision to Sharon Anyos (14-3) who went on to be the WBC, WBF and WIBA Women's Featherweight Champion.

However, fighting was just a part of holly's life. She grew up in a tough household where fighting was common. "By the time I got to be about 10, I learned how to punch in the face." Said Holly in an interview some time ago. "It was fun so I found fighting to be a good solution to social dilemmas when I was a kid."

first IKF Title she won was the IKF Bantamweight International Rules World title. She won it at the Croatian Club in Bankstown,Holly "Hellfire" Fernely's Sydney, New South Wales, Australia on September 24th, 1999 when she defeated Lynette Els of Three Rivers, Vereeniging, South Africa by kick KO in round 3.

Her next IKF title she won was a year later on March 4th, 2000 when she defeated Julie Wood of Newtown, New Zealand by KO at 2:36 of round one at the Bankstown Sports Hall in Bankstown, Sydney, Australia. in the bout holly won the IKF Featherweight Muay Thai World title.

Wanting to complete the sweep of a World Title in each of the 3 rule styles, Holly only had the Full Contact Rule style to conquer. She was scheduled to face Sarah Hall of England in July of 2000. However, the The POLITICAL Spoils In Australia! article as noted above explains what happened here. On January 1st, 2001, Holly won the title by forfeit when Hall and her promoter failed to re-schedule the bout by January 1st, 2001.

"Thank you for supporting me and all the other people who are walking the walk." said holly in her closing comments. We will surly miss you in the ring with the gloves on Holly, but time moves on, and we wish you luck in all you do in whatever your future brings.

IT'S ON!
Gill VS Morello
IKF PRO WELTERWEIGHT WORLD TITLE!

This past May 8th, former multi time IKF Amateur Champion Mike Morello of Santa Barbara, California, USA (Overall: 10-6-1) made a statement when he defeated England's top Welterweights, George Pattison of Sittingbourne, Kent, England, (30-5, Multi time World Champion) by unanimous decision. Morello who was making his Pro debut simply outworked Pattison and shut him down and fought his fight.

That statement sounded a loud bell for Morello's ability to take on anyone and in doing so he will now get an opportunity to face another one of England's best, Nick Gill of Stevenage, England (18-2) for the vacant IKF Pro Full Contact Rules Welterweight World Title.

The bout and event will be promoted by IKF Full Contact England Representative Colin Payne and has been scheduled for Sunday, February 22nd, 2009 at the "Casino Room" in Rochester, Kent, England.

DRAGON WATCH...

The Dragon...
In The Kitchen?

Recently 11 Time Kickboxing World Champion Don "The Dragon" Wilson was on one of the episodes of Jenna's Healthy Kitchen with Jenna Norwood. On the show, Don and Jenna make a healthy Veggie Fried Rice. It's an un-fried, no-rice raw food recipe. It's easy and surprisingly delicious!

Don won 11 Professional Kickboxing world titles during his career including the IKF Cruiserweight World title in 1999 when he set and still holds the record for the highest fighters purse ever paid to a Professional Kickboxer, $150,000.00. That was May 14th, 1999 in Lowell, Massachusetts, USA when he defeated 3 Time World Champion Dick Kimber on his way to winning the vacant IKF Pro Full Contact Rules World Cruiserweight (186.1 lbs - 195 lbs. or 84.6 kg - 88.6 kg) Title. (After fight picture at right)

He has also won a load of other Kickboxing titles. He has starred in 27 films and does about 1 film a year now, all of them made a profit. Check out "The Last Sentinel," coming up on the Sci Fi Channel. Something else we found out is that Don's face will also be appearing on a Chinese stamp soon.

Along with making the Veggie Fried Rice Don talked about his career in kickboxing and the movies he has been in. To see the episode on Jenna's website click HERE.

Bridges
Don't Fall Down!

Some may not remember a horrible tragedy that happened about a year ago in Minnesota (USA). On August 1st, 2007 the unthinkable happened. The I35W Bridge in Minneapolis, Minnesota over the Mississippi River collapsed! ( Click Here ) A major arterial interstate bridge in a big American city. many would think, "This doesn't happen in the U.S." But it does and it did.

A good friend of the IKF, Glen Legus of Minnesota, had a personal interest in this event and has made an effort to never forget this day.

His son-in-law Karge Olsen was on the I35W Bridge when it went down. Karge was badly hurt and has had a difficult time, but despite his injuries, he went back to work within weeks. Because of that he has been able to struggle thru the last year just barely keeping his family afloat, but none the less, afloat.

However, several of those hurt badly, and some of those that lost breadwinners, have gone deeper and deeper under. This pains Karge greatly, and despite his own hardships he wanted desperately to do something to help those not so lucky. So Karge and Glen decided to write the book, "Bridges Don't Fall Down: Stories from the I35W Bridge Collapse."

The book tells the story of those on the bridge that day, and Karge tells his story of life after the bridge collapse over the last year. The book is about that event and how it impacts the lives of those on the bridge that day. Karge and Glen tell the stories in verse of those on the bridge at that moment. Mixed in with those individual stories is Karge Olsen's experience as it unfolds over the year following the collapse. Karge shares his evolving month to month story of how that day changed his life, and how his life is now. He describes for us what he's done and been through in the year since the collapse.

Please remember that Karge's narrative is only one man's story of the struggle to survive, and to just get by, that has become the reality for those families that lost loves ones and for those seriously injured. That's why Karge decided to share his experience. By telling his story he hopes you'll have some idea of the enormity of this event for those whose lives are now forever changed. Telling their story is also an effort to help. Karge and Glen are donating ALL authors' royalties to the victims of the bridge collapse... To those that fell with the bridge that day.

For those who are willing to help out and purchase a copy of the book, please click HERE.

On September 18th, 2008, The New Bridge opened at 5:AM.

Schutt Sports will Market Brain-Pad Mouth Guards
Feature Patented Double Protection System
That's Designed To Reduce Risk Of Head Injuries

Having introduced the three best performing football helmets over the past 12 months, Schutt Sports - www.schuttsports.com is now adding another weapon to its arsenal of concussion-fighting products. Schutt will soon be marketing the Brain-Pad line of mouth guards - the most advanced mouth guard protection in the world. Brain Pad mouth guards feature patented technology, along with a dual-protection system, surrounding both the upper and lower teeth which, in turns, keeps the lower jaw locked into a position that decreases the likelihood of concussions or TMJ injuries.

"The new mouth guards will be marketed under the Schutt brand, but will feature Brain Pad technology," says Dave Rossi, of Schutt Sports. "This exclusive technology is the most advanced in the game, which is why we were interested in working with them. Our deal is really about combining two tremendous technologies: Schutt Helmets and Brain Pad mouth guards. When you put those together, the result is the most advanced and best performing protective system on the field today."

For Brain Pad, entering into a long term partnership with Schutt was a natural progression for the industry leading brand. "Our goal is to become the number one protective and performance mouth guard company in the world," said Joe Manzo, President of Brain-Pad, Inc. "With partnerships already established within the mixed martial arts community, the addition of the Schutt Sports partnership makes this goal a reality."

"The mouth guard category is a very diverse and highly fragmented market," says Rossi.

"It's not uncommon to see two players on the same field - one wearing a mouth guard that cost less than a dollar and the other using a custom device fitted by a dentist that cost hundreds of dollars. The new Schutt mouth guards will perform better than any of them and cost 10 times less than the custom mouth pieces."

Brain Pad technology, the foundation of the new Schutt mouth guards, got its start over a decade ago and really took off when it became a big player in the mixed martial arts industry. The benefits of the new technology soon became incontrovertible.

"The Brain Pad technology repositions the lower jaw while protecting both the upper and lower teeth - the first and only mouth guard to do that," says Chris Bolan, of Brain Pad. "The jaw is stabilized into a neutral position that greatly reduces the risk of jaw injuries, TMJ injuries and concussions. Recovery from TMJ injuries is much faster and breathing while clenching is extremely enhanced. Testing done in 1993 and then confirmed in 2005, shows a 40% reduction of impact energy to the base of the skull"

In addition to football, Rossi sees plenty of opportunities elsewhere for the new Schutt mouth guards.

"The Schutt brand is very strong in softball, so these new mouth guards will be a natural extension of the brand into that category. Plus, we have the chance to build business in other team sports, like basketball, baseball, lacrosse, hockey and others."

Schutt will be marketing five different models of the new mouth guard, with one created specifically for female athletes along with the new ION mouth guard designed with the professional athlete in mind.

NOTE: The IKF was the first Kickboxing Sanctioning Body to endorse the BrainPad (WIPPS) mouthguards. This followed with ISCF MMA also being the first MMA Sanctioning Organization to endorse the product as well. BrainPad has sponsored the IKF World Classic Amateur Kickboxing Tournament since 2000. At every tournament, BrainPad gives away a FREE BrainPad mouthguard to EVERY Fighter.
