August 2001 K-1 UNDERCARD BOUTS

Here's how the other bouts went on the night.

  1. IKF West Coast Champion Danny Kelly continued his winning ways defeating Ricardo Miranda by Unanimous Decision to improve his record to 11-1-1/3.

  2. IKF California Champion Armondo Ramos defeated Marco Matamoroas by Unanimous Decision to improve his winning record to 9-4 with 2 KO's.

  3. In a battle of 2 Great IKF Champions, IKF West Coast Champion Shawn Yacoubian and former IKF (Full Contact Rules) US Champion Gary Owens made a bid for the best fight of the night as they went toe to toe in a MuayThai Rules bout for all 3 rounds. In the end, Yacoubian edged out Owens with a Split Decision.

  4. Andre Walker Vs Carter Williams
In a battle of what many thought would be 2 future K-1 USA stars, Andre Walker and Carter Williams proved they need to put in a little roadwork before they make the decision to turn Pro. The 2 big Super Heavyweights slugged it out in round 1 with Walker eventually dropping Williams with a strong shot forcing referee Cecil Peoples to give him a standing 8 count. After the 8 count, Williams sat in the corner covering up until the bell ended the round. This could have easily been over in round 1 due to Carter's lack of response to Walker's punches. In round 2, Williams came out and pounded Walker with several strong head blows until he tired out again. Walker pressed Williams to the corner and without taking any blows, Williams simply slid down and quit and referee Cecil Peoples waived the bout off.

  5. Angela Rivera Vs Carrie Carruthers
    Angela Rivera
first started her title winning streak when she won the 1999 IKF/RINGSIDE National Amateur Tournament. Since then, she's only had one setback. A loss to Atlanta's IKF US Champion Trisha Hill in Monterey, CA. However, Rivera avenged that loss this last May in a non IKF Title bout at K-1 in a thrilling 5 rounds. Saturday she faced #1 IKF Ranked Canadian fighter, Carrie Carruthers. Carruthers started each round hard, strong and fast but seemed to fade in the later part of each round, which is the worst time to do so since most judges remember the ending of the round and rarely the beginning. In the end, Carruthers would not avenge her earlier loss to Rivera in October of 2000, instead, she would come up short again losing a unanimous decision.

  6. Frank Shamrock Vs Shannon Ritch
Both have done a lot of Mixed Martial Arts, but very little kickboxing. However tonight would be San Jose California's UFC Champion Frank Shamrock's debut into the sport of MuayThai as he took on ISCF "MMA" US Champion Shannon Ritch of Arizona. (See photo top right) It was a surprise to see this bout happen at all since there was such a large weight difference of 9 lbs. (Legal State Athletic Commission weight spread at this weight is 7 lbs. - Same in the IKF.) It was obvious Shamrock had power as he came out strong against Ritch seeming to bull him around the ring with ease. At 53 seconds into the first round, Shamrock kicked high and Ritch blocked it, however the block broke Ritch's arm and he dropped to the ring canvas halting the bout. The win gives Shamrock his first Kickboxing victory but the question is, will we see him do it again, and against who?

  7. Melchor Menor Vs William Sriyapai
Menor (See photo at right) has made quite a turnaround from a few years ago. With elbows being legal in this bout (Legal in Nevada) Menor split open the left side of Sriyapai's head in round 1, but it didn't stop him. Sriyapai who proved to be strong as well lasted the round. In round 2, Menor knocked him down forcing referee Tony Weeks to administer a standing 8 count. Round 3 was Menor's strongest of them all scoring on many different techniques. In round 4, we had another "Phantom" call by a referee as Duke Roufus fell victim to in the May K-1. After fending off a few punches, referee Tony Weeks stepped in between the two fighters and gave Sriyapai an 8 count. This was a terrible call be Weeks since Sriyapai was in no danger at all and was answering back on everything Menor threw at him. The end finally came for Sriyapai after Menor threw 2 knees at him, which he blocked with his arms, however referee Weeks elected to stop the bout at this time which we thought was an early stop of any pro bout. Sriyapai's only chance in this bout near the end was a knockout since at the stop, Menor was way ahead on points, 40-36.5, 40-34.5 and 40-34.

  8. Dewey Cooper added another K-1 Las Vegas win to his belt when he defeated Mark Miller with a 2nd round TKO.
